The number of students of determination enrolled in private schools in Abu Dhabi has more than doubled, increasing from 6,000 in 2023 to over 13,000 in 2024, thanks to a government-led inclusive education policy. This milestone is part of the Abu Dhabi Strategy for People of Determination (2020–2024), which aims to enhance services and improve the quality of life for individuals with additional educational needs.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) implemented the ‘Inclusive Education Model,’ mandating schools to identify and support students with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and other challenges. Schools must establish robust inclusion policies, hire specialized staff, and provide clear guidelines for additional fees.
ADEK also collaborated with the Department of Health to enhance specialized therapeutic services, such as psychological, speech, and occupational therapies, benefiting 1,359 students across 108 schools. Additionally, over 50 students transitioned from specialized to mainstream schools, further promoting inclusivity.
Efforts were expanded to early childhood education, ensuring younger children receive vital support. The initiative also increased autism-specific resources, adding 92 seats in mainstream and specialized institutions. These developments underline Abu Dhabi’s commitment to ‘Education for All’ and fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment for all students.
